ADHD Treatment · Maine Telepsychiatry

Adult ADHD diagnosis and treatment in Maine.

Thorough evaluation, honest diagnosis, and medication management for adult ADHD — via telehealth throughout Maine.

What adult ADHD looks like

ADHD in adults often looks nothing like the hyperactive child stereotype. Many adults with ADHD are quiet, introspective, and high-achieving — while privately struggling with time blindness, task paralysis, chronic disorganization, emotional dysregulation, and a persistent sense that they are not reaching their potential.

Adult ADHD is frequently underdiagnosed, especially in women and individuals who learned to compensate through intelligence or effort alone. If you've always felt like you have to work significantly harder than others to produce the same output — and no amount of willpower or planning systems seems to stick — ADHD may be part of the picture.

ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive
Difficulty sustaining focus, following through on tasks, and managing time — without significant hyperactivity.
ADHD, Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive
Restlessness, impulsivity, difficulty waiting, talking over others.
ADHD, Combined Presentation
Both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms present.
Late-Diagnosed ADHD
Many adults reach their 30s, 40s, or beyond before receiving an accurate diagnosis.

How Nicholas Eddy, PMHNP approaches ADHD

ADHD evaluation at Northwest Psychiatry is thorough — not a checklist on a 15-minute call. Nicholas takes a careful history, reviews symptom patterns across multiple life domains, and considers alternative explanations before arriving at a diagnosis. If ADHD is present, medication management is evidence-based and closely monitored.

1
Comprehensive Evaluation
A detailed psychiatric interview covering childhood history, current symptoms, functional impairments, and differential diagnoses. Nicholas does not rush to diagnose or prescribe.
2
Stimulant Medication Management
When appropriate, stimulant medications (amphetamines, methylphenidate) are highly effective for ADHD. Nicholas will discuss options, expected effects, and how to find the right dose.
3
Non-Stimulant Options
For patients who can't tolerate stimulants or prefer them, non-stimulant options (atomoxetine, guanfacine, bupropion) are available.
4
Coaching & Skills Integration
Medication improves capacity — but building on that capacity with practical skills and systems produces the best long-term outcomes.

What to expect

Session 1

Psychiatric evaluation

A 60–75 minute evaluation covering your history, current struggles, and what you're hoping to change. Nicholas may ask about childhood school experience, work performance, and relationships.

Week 2–4

Diagnosis and treatment plan

If ADHD is confirmed, you'll receive a clear diagnostic impression and a treatment rationale. If medication is appropriate, a starting prescription will be initiated at a low dose.

Month 1–2

Titration

Finding the right dose takes time. Regular check-ins during the first 4–8 weeks to assess response, adjust as needed, and address any side effects.

Ongoing

Maintenance monitoring

Once stable, quarterly follow-ups are typical. Controlled substances require regular monitoring — Nicholas will explain what that looks like.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an ADHD diagnosis via telehealth in Maine?

Yes. Maine permits ADHD evaluation and controlled substance prescribing via telehealth under current regulations. Northwest Psychiatry is fully compliant with all state and federal requirements.

What if I already have an ADHD diagnosis from elsewhere?

Nicholas will review your prior history and current symptom status. Existing diagnoses are taken seriously — you won't have to start from scratch unnecessarily.

Do I need neuropsychological testing to be diagnosed?

Not necessarily. A thorough clinical interview is the gold standard for ADHD diagnosis. Neuropsychological testing can be helpful in complex cases, and Nicholas will let you know if it would add value.

I'm worried about being dismissed or not believed.

That concern is valid — it happens. Nicholas approaches ADHD evaluations without a predetermined outcome. He's looking to understand your experience accurately, not to confirm or deny a diagnosis based on how you present.
