Neurofeedback Therapy Treatment · Maine Telepsychiatry

Remote neurofeedback therapy in Maine — guided by your psychiatrist.

Myndlift-powered EEG brain training for ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, and depression. Evidence-informed. Done at home. Clinician-monitored.

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that trains the brain using real-time EEG (electroencephalogram) data. During a session, sensors on your scalp measure your brainwave activity and feed that signal into software that rewards desired patterns — typically through audio or visual cues. Over time, this gentle, repetitive training helps the brain learn to self-regulate more effectively.

Neurofeedback has been studied for decades and has accumulated the strongest evidence for ADHD, where it is recognized as a level-5 (strongest) evidence-based intervention by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children, with growing adult evidence as well. It is also used as a complementary approach for anxiety, PTSD, depression, and sleep difficulties.

Myndlift Remote Neurofeedback
The platform Northwest Psychiatry uses — delivers clinician-guided neurofeedback sessions at home using a Muse EEG headband and a smartphone app.
ADHD Neurofeedback
Targets theta/beta ratios and executive function networks. An evidence-supported adjunct to stimulant medication for improving attention and impulse control.
Anxiety & PTSD Protocols
Alpha/theta and infra-low frequency training to reduce hyperarousal, intrusive thoughts, and nervous system dysregulation.
Depression & Anhedonia Protocols
Targets low frontal alpha asymmetry and left prefrontal engagement to support mood and motivational drive.
Sleep Regulation
SMR (sensorimotor rhythm) training to improve sleep onset and sleep architecture in patients with insomnia comorbid with psychiatric conditions.

How Nicholas Eddy, PMHNP integrates neurofeedback

Neurofeedback at Northwest Psychiatry is never a standalone product — it is offered selectively as part of a broader, individualized psychiatric care plan. Nicholas reviews your clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment goals to determine whether Myndlift neurofeedback is a good fit. If it is, you receive a Muse EEG headband and access to the Myndlift app, and Nicholas monitors your session data remotely and adjusts protocols as needed.

1
Psychiatric Evaluation First
Neurofeedback enrollment begins after a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. The protocol is selected to align with your primary diagnosis and treatment goals — not a one-size-fits-all program.
2
Myndlift Platform & Muse Headband
Sessions are done at home using the Muse 2 or Muse S EEG headband paired with the Myndlift app on your phone. Sessions are typically 20–30 minutes, 3–5 times per week.
3
Remote Clinical Monitoring
Your session data — including session count, brainwave trends, and protocol compliance — is visible to Nicholas through the Myndlift clinician dashboard. He reviews your progress and adjusts training parameters regularly.
4
Integration with Medication & Therapy
Neurofeedback is most effective as a complement to medication management and therapy, not a replacement. It is particularly valuable for patients who want to reduce medication burden or who have not fully responded to pharmacological treatment alone.

What to expect

Week 1–2

Enrollment & setup

After your provider determines neurofeedback is appropriate, you'll be enrolled in the Myndlift program. Your Muse headband will be configured and you'll receive a walkthrough of the app and protocol.

Weeks 2–6

Initial training phase

Early sessions focus on calibration. Most patients don't notice changes immediately — neurofeedback is cumulative. Aim for consistency: 3–5 sessions per week as recommended.

Month 2–3

Measurable changes

Most patients begin to notice subjective improvements in focus, reactivity, or sleep quality around the 20–30 session mark. Your provider will review your session data at follow-up appointments.

Ongoing

Protocol refinement & completion

Based on your response, Nicholas may adjust protocols, increase session targets, or taper training. A full course typically involves 40–60 sessions, though this varies by condition and goals.

Frequently asked questions

Is neurofeedback covered by insurance?

Neurofeedback is generally not covered by most insurance plans as a standalone service. Myndlift remote neurofeedback costs are separate from your psychiatric appointments. Ask about current pricing during your evaluation.

Do I need a Muse headband, and who provides it?

Yes, Myndlift uses the Muse 2 or Muse S EEG headband. The headband is either provided through your enrollment or purchased separately. Your provider will explain the options at the time of enrollment.

How is remote neurofeedback different from in-office neurofeedback?

Traditional neurofeedback requires weekly clinic visits with a technician. Myndlift remote neurofeedback lets you train at home on your own schedule — more sessions per week, more convenience, and lower cost — while keeping a licensed clinician in the loop via remote monitoring.

Can children receive neurofeedback through Northwest Psychiatry?

Northwest Psychiatry primarily serves adult patients (18+). If you are inquiring about neurofeedback for a minor, please call (360) 342-6445 to discuss whether accommodations can be made.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Yes. Neurofeedback is non-invasive and has an excellent safety profile. No electrical current is applied to the brain — the EEG sensors only measure existing brainwave activity. Side effects are rare but can include temporary fatigue or mild headache after sessions, particularly early in training.

What if I'm already on medication — can I still do neurofeedback?

Yes. Neurofeedback and psychiatric medications are fully compatible. In fact, combining them often produces better outcomes than either approach alone. Your provider will take your current medications into account when designing your neurofeedback protocol.
