What anxiety disorders look like

Anxiety is the most prevalent mental health condition in the United States. But anxiety disorders are more than feeling stressed or worried — they're persistent, often debilitating patterns of fear, physical tension, and avoidance that interfere with everyday life. If your anxiety is affecting your relationships, work, sleep, or ability to enjoy things, that's worth taking seriously.

Many people with anxiety are high-functioning on the outside while white-knuckling through every interaction internally. Others find that anxiety has started to shrink their world — avoiding situations, relationships, or opportunities because the anticipated anxiety isn't worth it.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Persistent, excessive worry about everyday things — work, health, money, family — that is difficult to control.
Panic Disorder
Recurring unexpected panic attacks and ongoing concern about having another one.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Intense fear of social situations and being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated by others.
Specific Phobias
Marked fear of specific objects or situations — heights, illness, needles, etc.
Agoraphobia
Fear of situations where escape would be difficult — often develops following panic disorder.

How Nicholas Eddy, PMHNP approaches anxiety

Anxiety treatment at Northwest Psychiatry is individualized. What works for GAD is different from what works for panic disorder, and medication alone rarely tells the whole story. Nicholas integrates medication management with therapeutic strategies and lifestyle medicine.

1
Medication Management
SSRIs and SNRIs are first-line for most anxiety disorders. For specific situations, other options exist. Nicholas discusses all options, risks, and expected timelines honestly.
2
Therapy Integration
CBT techniques and exposure-based approaches, either provided directly or coordinated with a therapist you're already seeing.
3
Mindfulness & Somatic Techniques
Evidence-based mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and somatic awareness as genuine clinical tools — not afterthoughts.
4
Goal-Oriented Treatment
Treatment is structured around your specific goals — whether that's getting back into social situations, managing work stress, or stopping panic attacks.

What to expect

Week 1

Full psychiatric evaluation

A comprehensive evaluation to understand the type of anxiety you're dealing with, your history, and any contributing factors. Not a quick intake — a real conversation.

Week 2–6

Medication initiation

Most anti-anxiety medications (SSRIs/SNRIs) take 2–6 weeks to reach therapeutic effect. Nicholas will monitor you closely during this period.

Month 2–3

Titration and refinement

Dose adjustments and ongoing check-ins to maximize benefit and minimize side effects. Many patients notice significant improvement within the first 2–3 months.

Ongoing

Long-term management

For some, medication is short-term. For others, ongoing management is appropriate. Nicholas will help you understand your options and make the decision together.

Ready to get started?

New patients are welcomed through Headway — scheduling takes minutes, and most major insurance plans are accepted.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need to be on medication forever?

Not necessarily. Many patients use medication for a defined period while developing coping skills, then successfully taper. Nicholas will discuss what's right for your situation.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist for anxiety?

A psychiatrist (or PMHNP) can prescribe medication and provide therapy. A therapist provides talk therapy only. At Northwest Psychiatry, you get both in one provider.

Is telehealth appropriate for severe anxiety?

Yes, in most cases. Telehealth actually reduces barriers for people with anxiety — no driving to a new place, no waiting room, less unfamiliar environment.

What if I've tried SSRIs and they didn't help?

There are many options beyond first-line SSRIs. Nicholas will work through the evidence with you to find an approach that fits your history and goals.
