5 Mindfulness Practices for Managing Anxiety

October 21, 2026 · 1 min read · Nicholas Eddy, PMHNP-BC

Simple, evidence-based mindfulness techniques you can start today to reduce anxiety and build emotional resilience.

Anxiety affects millions of people, and while professional treatment is often essential, there are practices you can build into your daily life that make a real difference.

1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique

When anxiety spikes, this simple exercise brings you back to the present: - 5 things you can see - 4 things you can touch - 3 things you can hear - 2 things you can smell - 1 thing you can taste

This interrupts the anxiety spiral by anchoring your mind in sensory reality.

2. Box Breathing

Used by Navy SEALs to stay calm under pressure: 1. Inhale for 4 counts 2. Hold for 4 counts 3. Exhale for 4 counts 4. Hold for 4 counts

Repeat 4 times. The slow, controlled breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system.

3. Body Scan Meditation

Lie down or sit comfortably. Starting from your feet, slowly bring attention to each part of your body, noticing tension without judgment. Move up from toes to head over 10–15 minutes.

4. Mindful Walking

Turn a simple walk into a practice: focus entirely on the physical sensation of each step — the ground beneath your feet, the movement of your arms, the temperature of the air. This is especially powerful in nature (hello, Pacific Northwest!).

5. The "Leaves on a Stream" Exercise

Imagine sitting by a gentle stream. As thoughts arise, picture placing each one on a leaf and watching it float away downstream. You don't engage with the thought — just observe it pass.

When to Seek Professional Help

These practices complement professional treatment but don't replace it. If anxiety is interfering with your daily life, relationships, or work, reaching out to a mental health professional is the right next step.
