What to expect at your first appointment
First appointments can feel daunting. Here's exactly what happens — step by step — so you can walk in (virtually) with confidence.
From booking to care plan
Book through Headway
5 minutesUse the Headway platform to find an available time that works for you. You'll enter your insurance information at this step — Headway verifies your benefits automatically so you know your cost before the appointment.
You'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment time and a link to complete your intake forms.
Complete intake paperwork
15–20 minutesBefore your appointment, you'll complete a brief intake questionnaire covering your medical and psychiatric history, current symptoms, and goals. This helps Nicholas prepare for your evaluation so the session can be focused on you — not on forms.
Complete intake forms at least 24 hours before your appointment for the best experience.
Set up your telehealth visit
5 minutesAll appointments are conducted via a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform — no downloads or accounts required. You'll receive a link before your appointment. Simply test your camera and microphone in advance. You'll need a device with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a private space.
Chrome or Firefox give the best experience. Smartphones and tablets work too.
The evaluation session
60–75 minutesYour first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Nicholas will ask about your current concerns, mental health history, family history, medications, sleep, and day-to-day functioning. This is a conversation, not an interrogation — there are no right or wrong answers. You can ask as many questions as you'd like.
You're in control of what you share. It's okay to say 'I'm not sure' or 'I'd rather not discuss that yet.'
Collaborative care planning
Last 10–15 minutesAt the end of the evaluation, Nicholas will share his initial impressions, discuss possible diagnoses, and outline treatment options. Together, you'll agree on a starting plan — whether that's therapy, medication, lifestyle recommendations, or a combination. You are always an active participant in your care decisions.
You'll leave with clarity about next steps. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled before you disconnect.
Prep checklist
Having these ready will make your first session run smoothly.
