First appointments can feel daunting. Here's exactly what happens — step by step — so you can walk in (virtually) with confidence.
Use the Headway platform to find an available time that works for you. You'll enter your insurance information at this step — Headway verifies your benefits automatically so you know your cost before the appointment.
You'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment time and a link to complete your intake forms.
Before your appointment, you'll complete a brief intake questionnaire covering your medical and psychiatric history, current symptoms, and goals. This helps Nicholas prepare for your evaluation so the session can be focused on you — not on forms.
Complete intake forms at least 24 hours before your appointment for the best experience.
All telehealth appointments use Doxy.me — a HIPAA-compliant video platform. No downloads or accounts required. Simply visit doxy.me/test to confirm your camera and microphone work. You'll need a device with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a private space.
Chrome or Firefox give the best experience. Smartphones and tablets work too.
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Nicholas will ask about your current concerns, mental health history, family history, medications, sleep, and day-to-day functioning. This is a conversation, not an interrogation — there are no right or wrong answers. You can ask as many questions as you'd like.
You're in control of what you share. It's okay to say 'I'm not sure' or 'I'd rather not discuss that yet.'
At the end of the evaluation, Nicholas will share his initial impressions, discuss possible diagnoses, and outline treatment options. Together, you'll agree on a starting plan — whether that's therapy, medication, lifestyle recommendations, or a combination. You are always an active participant in your care decisions.
You'll leave with clarity about next steps. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled before you disconnect.
Having these ready will make your first session run smoothly.
A list of current medications and dosages (including supplements)
Names of any previous psychiatric providers, diagnoses, or hospitalizations
A private, quiet space where you won't be interrupted for 75 minutes
Your device charged and connected to stable internet
Phone nearby in case of technical difficulties
A sense of what you're hoping to get from care — even if vague
That's completely normal. Send us a message first — no commitment required.
